Barnsley and Penistone Liberal Democrats petition to request that 

Barnsley Council will confirm that libraries, and the contents of the libraries, will be free from political interference.

Following the decision to target and remove the pride flag from the town hall, and any mention of pride on the council website, residents are concerned about future decisions that the council will take – or attempt to take – with regards to Pride and the section of our communities that it represents.

We, the signatories, note with concern that councils in Essex, Kent, St Helens, and Warwickshire, to name a few, have acted by attempting to remove LGBTQ-linked books on Library shelves. 
We ask that BMBC confirm, in writing, that no attempts will be made by this council to remove any books from shelves, or to attempt any undue political influence on the materials within libraries, ensuring they remain a safe and inclusive space for all.
